About James Nielsen

Hi and thanks for visiting my website. I’m a Tasmanian-based landscape and portrait photographer. Born in Canberra, my family and I moved to Tasmania when I was four and we’ve all remained since. I consider Tasmania my spiritual home and the place I will always return to, to find solace.

It is the call of the wild places and the rugged beauty of Tasmania’s extraordinary landscapes, that keeps me deeply and intrinsically engaged in photography. Being in nature feeds my soul and nourishes my creativity. I’ll always be in search of that perfect shot, that perfect moment, but I hope I never find it; so that I can keep immersing myself in the wilderness.

I remember falling in love with photography - I’m not sure I found it, but rather it found me. As a child, I was endlessly fascinated by my father taking photos with his old Minolta film camera. I loved watching him. He mostly took shots of either us kids, our beautiful mother, or the many cars he owned or admired. What he instilled in me was not only an appreciation for the artistry of photography, but also for the process of capturing an image.

Through my photography, I aim to transport those who view my art to the rugged coastlines and sublime forests and waterfalls of Tasmania and beyond. I am transfixed by light and how it changes a landscape and I only hope that I do it justice.
